SURF and cable handling equipment investment
14 DECEMBER 2023
Motive Offshore Group announces seven-figure investment in essential SURF and cable handling equipment.
As offshore wind employs a greater use of SURF and cable handling equipment and services to tackle more substantial cables, in deeper waters, the industry faces a surge in demand for efficient solutions.
Motive prioritises new equipment investment ensuring it stays flexible and responsive to client requirements, delivering streamlined, practical solutions when and wherever needed.

Following major wins in SURF and cable handling projects throughout 2023, this latest investment reinforces the Motive cable lay and handling fleet significantly and includes the purchase of a 450Te Reel Drive System originally manufactured and sold by Motive in 2017.

Additional new build equipment will be available in the Motive fleet from January 2024, including:
- Bow Cable Engines
- Tensioners
- Linear Cable Engines
- Roller Highways
Plans for the new cable handling equipment includes relocation of the 450Te Reel Drive System to the Motive US Gulf of Mexico base, several of the assets relocating to enhance fleet availability at the newly established Motive Do Brasil Ltda base in Rio de Janeiro, and additional Bow Cable Engines and Tensioners being purpose-built for upcoming project mobilisations.
This latest move follows a substantial investment earlier this year in the Motive Certification and Inspection equipment pool in the Middle East. Already offering the largest Spooling Winch fleet available in the UAE, new additions included a 50Te Traction Winch, 200Te Spooling Winch, Viper Pressure Lubricators and various NDT and Rope Access equipment.
A specialist supplier of cable handling and deployment equipment with F4OR granted status recognition, Motive has supported over 30 projects on major wind farms, covering all types of cable handling requirements including telecom cable lay and recovery, submarine cable installation, island-connector power cable installation, vessel-to-vessel transfers, quayside transpooling, and cable storage.
A leading full-cycle service provider, Motive fulfils all aspects of a project from equipment design and build; project management and operations, to testing and certification.
Following a multi-million investment from private equity firm H2 Equity Partners in 2022, Motive accelerated its growth strategy, increasing revenue from the renewables sector while sustainably expanding capacity and footprint to create an enviable range of assets for global deployment.
